The History of The Bear Group S.A.
The Bear Group S.A. was started after chairperson Sam Esra witnessed
grisly footage of bear baiting in Pakistan, screened in 1997.
Sam was so horrified by what she saw that she decided to form an
organisation supporting and striving towards the rescue of these
tortured animals.
Working together with a dedicated committee Sam has been instrumental
in helping bears around the world, including the bears in zoos here in South Africa.
Funds collected from donations are sent to various organisations to aid them
in the fight to rescue the bears of the world from the cruelty and torture
inflicted on them. Since 1998 The Bear Group S.A. has donated R130 716.00 to this cause.
Special projects of The Bear Group S.A. include donating funds to help build a
climbing/exercise frame for the bears at the Johannesburg Zoo as well as adopting Donny, a
black bear rescued from a bear bile farm in China by IFAW and rehabilitated in their
sanctuary in China.
